....It’s working now, yes? Yes. Good, then. What am I here for? What do you mean ‘what am I here for’? I’m here for the same reason everyone else who finds themselves ensconced responsibly in critical, creative thinking and a healthy cultivation of boredom: to talk about books. Obviously.

Week 12: Bloodchild, by Octavia Butler (points: 2)

 My reaction to this story is that it is somehow familiar. Not in the way that Butler stole from someone else her idea, or that this story has been rewritten ad nauseum. I mean it in that Gan's story is something that is very familiar to the average consumer of period romance, and maybe even at some level, the female-hindbrain. This is an arranged marriage between Gan and T'Gatoi, something that was practiced for a majority of human history, across culture and era. T'Gatoi being a literal alien isn't even that strange in this context - humans use that word to describe 'foreigners' after all, and cross culture marriage for the consolidation of power and resources was an extremely prevalent reason for arranged marriages.  Gan's equivocation over accepting T'Gatoi before ultimately accepting is interesting to me. Week 8: The Hundred Thousand Kingdoms, by N.K. Jemison (6)

Oh I really liked this one. Also, I read The Hundred Thousand Kingdoms  back to back with Sirens of Titan , so the intersection of religion and culture and all it’s tragic glories were fresh in my mind. I personally feel like either of these two books could comfortably fit onto the ‘Narrative of Spiritual Eduction’ list, in all fairness. Questioning and challenging religious teachings and religious authorities isn’t anything new, either in fiction or in reality, as exemplified nicely by the roughly fifty years between when Sirens of Titan  and The Hundred Thousand Kingdoms ’ publications. But what I especially appreciate about The Hundred Thousand Kingdoms  is that it’s religion is something more flexible than we find in our Judeo-Christian tomes, and is, uniquely, still a story being told. Week 2: Dracula, by Bram Stoker (5)

This book was, to me, obviously written for a time when novels were the only form of entertainment. This took me way longer to get through than it really should have, but Dracula  was dense, and I am definitely out of practice in novel reading. As far as the novel itself goes, before it became more of a slough and less of a joy to get through, I really enjoyed the set up and anticipation, and how Stoker put breadcrumbs and foreshadowing into the very atmosphere of this novel. Even though Dracula  is renowned the world over and adapted into new media and pop culture even now, I found myself enjoying the tale as it was unfolding, and in fact wondering why modern horror doesn’t do what Dracula  does so well.  Modern horror has a habit of favoring the atmosphere more than the characters, making the piece a horror from how the audience has to experience and view horrible things, whereas in Dracula, the   horror comes from what horrible things the characters have to deal with.
